The ongoing ransomware attack across Asian and European markets is a disturbing reminder of how susceptible information technology systems are to cyberattacks. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies are currently reviewing the evidence of this attack and its potential impact on our nation’s information systems.
Cyberattacks that reach the healthcare sector are particularly troubling since we expect our sensitive health information to remain private. The Texas Health Services Authority (THSA) is monitoring the current ransomware attack, with special attention to the healthcare industry in Texas. THSA encourages all healthcare entities in Texas to stay vigilant as the situation unfolds.
Regardless of the outcome of the attack, the THSA continues to review and enhance its SECURETexas certification and supporting programs to better protect Texans’ sensitive health information. We applaud the efforts of the security agencies working to contain the attack in the US. We highly encourage the Texas healthcare community to place proper safeguards on protected health information to mitigate the impact of future threats.
